The bathroom is supposed to be one of the cleanest rooms in the house, so the last thing it needs is a barrage of pests crawling up the walls. The humidity and moisture buildup in our bathrooms attract all kinds of pests that live in Illinois. They might be looking for water to drink, warm and damp conditions, or other insects to prey on, and chances are, they’ll find it.

To learn more about common bathroom pests, read up on the Terminix Anderson technicians’ expert advice below.

Common Pests That Live in Bathrooms

There are three pests in particular that we find swarming our bathrooms here in Illinois:

Silverfish: High humidity, dim lights, and moisture will attract silverfish to your bathroom. Because they are poor climbers, you’ll often find them on the floor of your shower or other low places.

Cockroaches: Roaches like bathrooms for the same reasons that silverfish do, but in addition, they’ve been known to feast on toothpaste, soap, and any grime that they can find!

Ants: Ants are infamous for crawling up our shower walls and congregating in our sinks. They love the excess moisture and often crawl through our drains to get to it.

Spiders, drain flies, and centipedes are all also likely to be found in your bathroom for similar reasons. There are lots of pests to watch out for!

The Dangers of Bathroom Bugs

While most bathroom pests can be just a nuisance, some can pose serious health risks to you and your family. Cockroaches, for instance, can spread harmful bacteria and trigger allergies. Some spiders found in Illinois bathrooms may have venomous bites.

Another real danger is their potential to multiply rapidly in the moist, warm environment of your bathroom. What starts as a single bug sighting can quickly turn into a full-blown infestation if left unchecked.

Maintaining a clean, dry bathroom is key to preventing pest infestations. Regularly wiping down surfaces, fixing leaky pipes, and having proper ventilation can go a long way in deterring pests. Make sure toothbrushes are stored safely in a covered area (like a medicine cabinet), along with any makeup tools (like brushes and applicators).

However, it’s always best to call in the experts. Local pest exterminators have the tools, knowledge, and experience to eliminate existing pests and implement preventative measures that keep infestations out of your bathroom in the long run.

Preventing Pest Problems in the Bathroom

Keeping your bathroom dry is the most helpful thing you can do to keep pests out. Implement these measures into your cleaning routine:

  • Regularly look for leaks in your plumbing and shower fixtures.
  • Wipe away standing water on your countertops, the floor, or anywhere else.
  • Clean up any soap, shampoo, or toothpaste spills right away.
  • Keep your bathroom well-ventilated, especially during showers.
  • Install window screens in your bathroom so that pests can’t get in.

Taking any steps that you can to reduce excess moisture and filth in your bathroom and the rest of your home will help you steer clear of pest problems!
