Nobody likes fleas and ticks—these parasitic pests invade our homes, bite us and our pets, and make it much harder for us to enjoy spending time outside. Especially in the warmer seasons of the year, keeping a watch for signs of ticks becomes more important than ever. It’s also important to be on alert for signs of fleas year-round because they can drive our pets crazy with their itchy bites and potentially pass on diseases.

Anderson Pest Solutions is here to teach you all of the signs of a flea or tick infestation to help keep your family and your pets safe. Read on to learn how to check for fleas or ticks around your property!

Can You See Fleas?

Fleas are very small insects, but we are able to spot them with the naked eye. Some of the most typical signs of fleas are:

  • Noticing live adult fleas on your pets. They often gather together toward the hind legs, neck, and head.
  • Strange pet behavior, including restlessness, scratching, hair loss, and bumps on their skin.
  • Flea dirt—pieces of feces that look like little flakes of black pepper.
  • Tiny eggs, only about 0.5mm long, can be found in rugs, bedding, carpets, and gaps in your floorboards.

How to Look for Signs of Ticks

Signs of ticks are often only found after the bite has already happened. When they find a host to feed on, ticks pierce the skin, injecting an anesthetic into their body. This is why people don’t often feel tick bites, they just see the tick in their skin. As the tick becomes engorged with blood, it will fall off of its host. If you catch it before it’s done, though, you can remove it with tweezers and throw it away in a sealed bag.

Tick bites usually have a dark red center and a lighter red ring around them, making a bullseye symbol. Their bites are usually harmless, but some ticks have the ability to transmit dangerous diseases like Lyme disease. Ask your doctor about symptoms related to a recent tick bite.
