Springtails in Illinois

Springtails are small pests that may come in different shapes and sizes. But the distinguishing factor that they all possess is a specialized appendage known as a furcula, located beneath their abdomen. When threatened, the springtail releases this furcula, launching itself into the air to escape danger. These small insects sometimes make their way into homes, typically appearing in basements, bathrooms, and kitchens if they do find their way inside. If someone ever encounters a swarm of hundreds or even thousands of tiny, dark, jumping bugs, they would likely be correct to identify the pests as springtails.

Springtail Habitat

Springtails can startle homeowners by showing up in significant numbers in damp indoor spots like kitchen sinks, bathtubs, or the soil of potted plants. Outdoors, they may gather in swimming pools, wet landscaped areas, vegetable gardens, or on the surface of mud puddles. While they are most commonly seen in spring and early summer, they can thrive year-round in humid conditions. Springtail infestations are typically linked to moisture, decaying organic matter, and the presence of mold.

Springtail Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers

Because springtails leap when startled, they are sometimes mistaken for fleas. However, unlike fleas, springtails do not bite people or animals, transmit diseases, or harm household items. These pests are primarily a nuisance and can become an issue in newly built homes due to moisture in construction materials or wet plaster. As the structure dries out, the springtails typically either die or move elsewhere. They can also be bothersome around swimming pools, where they sometimes drown in large numbers, forming a visible layer on the water’s surface. While unsightly, they can be safely removed without any health risks.
