In Illinois, silverfish often invade homes during wet weather, slipping in through tiny openings around the foundation or walls. Since they’re nocturnal, you may only see them when they scatter in the dark after turning on a light.

Silverfish may not bite or spread disease, but that doesn’t mean they’re harmless. These pests can cause significant damage to your personal belongings over time. They feed on a wide range of materials, especially those containing starches and sugars, such as books, important documents, photographs, and cardboard. Natural fabrics like cotton and linen are also vulnerable, making clothing, curtains, and bedding prime targets.

To keep silverfish from entering your home, close off entry points by filling gaps in your foundation, walls, and siding. Be sure to dump out any standing water and clean up debris in your yard.

• Insulation Protection: Ensure insulation is properly covered to limit access.

Managing excess moisture is essential to keeping pests away. Inspect your plumbing regularly to catch any leaks early. In bathrooms, always run the exhaust fan during and after showers and wipe up any water spills. Additionally, ensure your crawl spaces have good ventilation to prevent dampness.
