How Do Termites Spread in Illinois and Indiana?

How do termites spread in Illinois and Indiana

Believe it or not, termites do not spread at a rapid rate. However, because their activity can go on for so long before being discovered, the spread of a termite infestation is one of the most dangerous pest problems. Termites spread when they swarm. A colony can also spread so long as the termites have the resources they need to survive and thrive. The factors that affect their ability to spread include:

  • Presence of wood in contact with soil
  • Amount of moisture present
  • Climate and seasonal factors
  • Maturity and size of the termite colony

Do Termites Spread Quickly?

After a termite colony has been active for more than a couple years, the infestation can spread more quickly. A mature termite colony that has been growing for at least five years can consume up to a pound of wood per day. This may not seem like a lot, but this can add up over time if the infestation is not caught in time. Colonies range in size—they can contain anywhere from several hundred to thousands upon thousands of members. Queen termites can lay up to 30,000 eggs in a single day (more than 10 million in a year). This number proves that a single termite problem can grow exponentially.

Can I Get Termites From My Neighbors in the Midwest?

Seeing your neighbors undergo a termite problem might make you think twice about getting your own property checked for an infestation. It’s not always the case that termites have spread from home to home, but it’s important to get an inspection if your property was built at the same time as your infested neighbors’ home.  In general, termite infestations are unpredictable—just because your neighbors have termites does not mean you are sure to have them as well. As always, it’s simply best to stay on top of termite prevention and get regular inspections regardless of whether your neighbors have termite problems or not.

How and When do Termites Spread?

Termites spread into new colonies by traveling through underground mud tubes or cracks in the walls, and by swarming to begin new colonies. Although they won’t infest an entire neighborhood at the same time, it’s always wise to get a termite inspection if some of your neighbors are dealing with termites. In any case, you can begin to implement termite prevention to keep you and your family safe from an infestation.
