What Medicine Should You Take for Bed Bug Bites?

Bed bug bites can cause mild discomfort or pain, usually associated with how itchy the bites can be. There are several things you can do to ease the pain. When taking over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. This is one of the easiest ways to help reduce swelling and overall pain. If you have any swelling, consider taking an antihistamine such as Benadryl. As with all medications, it’s crucial to consult your doctor to be on the safe side.

At-Home Remedies for Bed Bug Bites

Not everyone has anti-itch cream at hand. Thankfully, there are several natural remedies you can use with items you likely have in your pantry!

  • For quick relief, use 100% pure aloe vera gel on your bites. This can prevent secondary skin infections.
  • Soak a cotton ball with lemon juice or witch hazel, and apply to the bites. These are both natural astringents.
  • Mix baking soda with water until a thick paste is formed. Apply the mixture generously to your bites and let dry for an hour or more. Wash it off with warm water.
  • Apply toothpaste to the site of the bites. The menthol within toothpaste is an anti-itch agent.

When to See a Doctor for Bed Bug Bites

If your bed bug bites are not healing properly within the typical time frame (one to two weeks), it’s best to consult your doctor. If you form welts, a bad rash, or a possible skin infection from the bite, it’s also necessary to consult a medical professional.
